Hugo Alfvén International Conducting Competition 2026

The 2nd Hugo Alfvén International Conducting Competition will be held from 11th to 15th of august 2026 in Falun, Sweden with the professional chamber orchestra Dalasinfoniettan.

Hugo Alfvén International Conducting Competition – A different kind of competition.
The purpose of the competition is to give professional conductors an opportunity for inspiration, to enhance skills and last but not least a possibility to boost your career.
The competition has a slightly different structure than normal. There are no elimination rounds. 
The first four days are devoted to a master class with the conductor Claire Levacher. The participants, who are selected for the competition, will work and develop together during the week in theoretical lessons and work sessions in front of the professional chamber orchestra Dalasinfoniettan. The competition ends with a final concert where a jury assesses the contestants and their skills. 
The jury consists of conductors and musicians from the orchestra. The competition will be organized by Dalasinfoniettan, Musik i Dalarna.

1. Mission and principles of the Conducting Competition

The work of a conductor is a lifelong achievement.
The Hugo Alfvén Conducting Competition reflects the unmistakable artistic passion for music and commitment that characterizes the conductor’s own artistry. 

The competition is open to those who want to develop as a conductor and performer.

3. Conditions of Admission to the Conducting Competition

Elegibility
1. The Conducting Competition is open to conductors of all nationalities. Applications will be considered regardless of the candidates ethnic origin, faith or gender.
2. The Conducting Competition is open to conductors born after 1st January 1974.

Registration period

The completed application including personal letter and video recording must be sent to the Competition no later than 15th April 2026.

How to apply

The candidate should fill out the application form, in English.
The application form will be available from 1st March 2026–15th April 2026.

The application form must include the following:

a. A photo taken within the last 12 months
To be used for programs, marketing etc.

b. Curriculum vitae/Personal letter
A CV with a personal letter that specifies the candidate’s previous experience and career: as a musician, studies, name of professors, highlights of musical activities, etc.

c. Video recordings

  • Only video recordings subsequent to 1st January 2022 will be accepted.
  • The recording must show the conductors full face as seen by the orchestra as well as members of the orchestra.
  • The recording must be made with an ensemble of at least 12 musicians.
  • The recording should be 20 minutes and consist of 15 minutes conducting a rehearsal and 5 minutes conducting a concert.
  • The video should clearly indicate the name of the ensemble and the titles conducted.
  • The competition guarantee that the video recordings submitted by the candidate will be used for selection purposes only and will not be used for any other purpose.

d. A photocopy of passport

Candidates who submit false information or material will be disqualified.

Selection of candidates

  • The Artistic Directors will either accept or reject candidates for the competition after reviewing applications and video recordings.
  • The Artistic Directors will select four (4) candidates for the competition.
  • Results of the selection process will be sent to candidates by e-mail before 1st June 2026 and published on the website: www.musikidalarna.se
  • No reason for accepting or rejecting applications will be given.

Registration fee

  • The amount of the registration fee is 50 €.

  • The registration of the candidate will be confirmed upon payment of registration fee.
  • For all candidates, the registration fee is non-refundable.

4. The Competition

Dates
11th to 15th of August 2026

Venue
Kulturhuset Tio14 in Falun, Sweden.

Accommodation and meals
All travels, hotel and meals is to be payed by the candidate.

Orchestra
Dalasinfoniettan (Claire Levacher, Chief conductor) will be the competition’s official orchestra.

L. van Beethoven, Symphony No. 4
M. Davies, Ojai Overture
P. Tchaikovsky, Valse from Serenade for String Orchestra op. 48

Workshop and Final
The competition is being carried out in the form of a workshop with Maestra Claire Levacher and ends with a final concert on Saturday 15th of August before a jury.
The jury will then select a winner of the competition. 

Announcement of results
The results of the final round will be announced at Kulturhuset Tio14, following the jury’s deliberation, in the presence of the audience. 

5. Award Ceremony
The Award Ceremony will be held at Kulturhuset Tio14 after the announcement of the result of the final round of the competition.

6. Prize

  • The competition has only one winner.
    (No second or third prizes.)
  • In the event of a tie, the prize will be shared. 

Prize
The winner will be awarded two (2) productions with Dalasinfoniettan in the following seasons.

7. Communication and Publicity
The candidates will be required to cooperate in all film, photo sessions and/or interviews planned by the competition.

8. Insurance
1. The staff and partners of the competition will not be liable for accidents indicated below occurring during the competition:
a. Damage to or loss of candidates’ belongings.
b. Physical, material or moral injury caused or sustained by candidates.

2. All candidates are therefore advised to make their own appropriate insurance arrangements.

9. Objections
1. Decisions made by the Executive Committee regarding the administration of the competition selection based on the application and video recordings and the jury’s decision on evaluation are final and irrevocable.
2. Candidates may not appeal against the above decisions.

10. Disputes
If an amicable solution cannot be found in the event of a dispute, the matter will come under the jurisdiction of Swedish law.

11. Official language 
The official language is English.

12. GDPR
1. According the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of 25th May 2018 we inform our candidates that the competition will collect, use and share all the information that you provide with the Executive Committee and the jury members of the competition.
2. During the competition, your biography and photo will be used for the promotional purposes of the competition.
